The Ivy Brasserie, Windsor.

The Ivy Brasserie, Windsor.

With Tony and Erin flying over from the Canadian Rockies, we managed to squeeze in a brief meet-up on the very first night of the first leg of their mini-European tour (UK, Switzerland, Italy).

After their long flight from Calgary and a much-needed power nap at their hotel, we picked them up and headed to Windsor for a short visit, a meal, and a proper catch-up.

It was Erin’s first time in Windsor, so we strolled up the Long Walk and had a gentle meander around the town. We didn’t make it all the way to the Copper Horse statue of George III — it’s over 2.5 miles up the tree-lined path, but instead settled for a pub halfway along. In fairness, they’d just stepped off a transatlantic flight and the sky was threatening rain!

From there, we wandered back to The Ivy, a plush brasserie sitting right opposite the main entrance to the Castle.

Given the restaurant is part of the renowned Ivy chain of brasseries and cafés, quality was always going to be a given, but we were pleasantly surprised by the price. We went for the “1917 Two-Course Heritage Menu,” which was ridiculously good value. It’s only available on weekdays and at certain times, but it’s well worth a look; better value than many pub meals!

Afterwards, we took a wander along the Thames and then popped into the George Inn on the high street, where live musicians were keeping the guests entertained.

By 9 p.m. we dropped Tony and Erin back at their hotel. They needed an early night to start adjusting to the time difference, as they were heading up to Norfolk the following morning to visit family.

Tony and I go way back to early childhood, and although we’ve stayed in touch over the decades, with 7000km between our homes we rarely get to meet. However, this was the second time we’ve met up this year.

It was lovely to meet Erin for the first time and find out how much we all share, not least our love of the outdoors and travelling.

Next time – Canada!
